The day may have had started off rainy, but the dull weather certainly had not dampened the spirits of our girls in 1A! The first day of their EFL journey saw start of the bloom of our girls' budding potentials.
IN THE MORNING:
Bright, excited faces greeting the school early in the morning, while the teachers took care of administrative matters and settling them down.
Just look at these radiant smiles! The girls spotted posing next to their Co-form, Mr. Wan.
FIRST ACTIVITY: THE SCIENCE CENTRE
The girls set off from the school at 9.00 am for the Science Centre, where they were brought to a food lab by an enthusiastic instructor. With the help of worksheets and prepared food materials, students learnt about the chemistry of food. Besides experiencing how to bake Walnut-Butter scones for the first time, they also conducted several lab experiments to check for protein in the food that they eat!
The girls in the progress of baking their scones. It was really heartening to see them displaying such serious and determined attitude in the process of learning and working together towards a positive outcome.
That long, arduous wait while the instructor retrieves the scones out of the oven after 20 minutes of baking...
And the wonderful final product! 100% made and customised by our girls, who paid meticulous attention to every detail you see on their scones.
Free scones given by the girls to their accompanying teachers as a token of appreciation. In the STC family, the teachers and students do their best to take care of each others' welfare. (: Every single day, we teachers find many things in the actions/ words of our students to be grateful and thankful for!
BREAK: LUNCH, PLEDGE, ANGEL & MORTAL
After organising and helping each other to distribute the packed lunch and drinks, our hungry girls posed for a class photo in the canteen before their well-deserved lunch at 12.30 pm.
Girls are required to decorate and pen down their personal pledge, to be better persons for others.
A candid photograph depicting the girls having an enjoyable and cheerful conversation with the Form teacher, Ms. Fong. Cheeky laughter and wide smiles filling up the atmosphere of the classroom!
Girls were asked to play the Angel & Mortal game, in which they write words of encouragement for a randomly selected classmate, anonymously. This photograph was taken right after the class received their first note. Our girls were engrossed in reading positive words of motivation of and for them, while trying their best to figure out who their Angel was.
SECOND ACTIVITY: VALUES IN ACTION (BAKING HONEYJOYS)
As part of their charity programme/ pledge, the girls were brought to the Kitchens in the school, where they proceeded to make 16 honey joys each in their respective groups. They were assigned individual roles in group, however their enthusiasm encouraged them to participate in almost every role, working closely together with their classmates.
Step 1: Warming and stirring honey with the cornflakes. A girl was enjoying her role as the honey stirrer a little too much (:
Step 2: The honey-mixed cornflakes were placed gently into empty muffin liners for baking.
Step 3: A girl seen placing her unbaked-honeyjoys carefully into the oven while heeding the instructions of the teacher in-charge to wear her oven mitts.
Step 4: Baking. This photo captured the innocence of our girls, who were seen squatting down and waiting patiently in front of the oven for their honeyjoys to be ready.
Step 5: Ding-Ding! At the sounds of the timer, the oven was opened to reveal... trayfuls of honey joys! Just look at the crispy golden color! All due to the efforts of our determined girls.
Step 6: Retrieving the honey joys from the oven carefully with (again) the oven mitts. The honey joys were then placed and sealed within empty plastic containers for the girls to bring home to their families.
We are proud of you too, girls!

In sum, Day 1 of EFL both began and ended with a lot of enthusiasm, smiles, and kindness. The girls in 1A have always been helpful, kind, and sensible, and this EFL journey aims to bring out more potential for personal betterment through self-exploration, reflection, and empathy for others within the girls. We hope that they are getting a good night's sleep tonight, and that tomorrow's carefully planned itinerary will help the girls in their lifelong self-discovery journey! (:
Auf wiedesehen.
